BIOFOS project is an initiative funded by the European Union under the 7th Framework Programme, aiming to provide a commercial outlet to existing technology on food quality control.

A BIOFOS device aims to address the need for a highly sensitive, specific, reliable, compact, low-cost and standalone detection system by combining the most promising concepts from the photonic, biological, nanochemical and microfluidic parts of lab-on-a-chip (LoC) systems (BIOFOS 4 platforms). BIOFOS is based on optical interference sensing chips, ensuring high reliability and accuracy while the use of aptamers (oligonucleotide or peptide molecules) as biotransducers gives highly specific detection and the potential of 30 times reusability. For immobilizing the biorecognition elements onto the sensing area of the chips, advanced surface functionalization techniques are followed. The simple sample pre-treatment processes and microfluidic structures that have been developed, exhibit significant advantages over other methods used until now, making the BIOFOS system an easy-to use, device for the reliable and fast analysis of food samples, capable to be utilized by non-specialized personnel from the food sector.
